About Dr. Jacobs

Dr. Theodore Jacobs is the author of three books. The Year of Durocher, a comic, coming of age novel, and two books of essays on psychoanalysis: The Possible Profession; The Analytic Process of Change, and The Use of the Self: Countertransference and Communication in the Analytic Situation.

He is also co-editor with Arnold Rothstein of On Beginning an Analysis, and over sixty papers on a variety of psychoanalytic topics. Theodore J. Jacobs, M.D., is Clinical Professor of Psychiatry (Emeritus at The Albert Einstein College of Medicine and training and supervising analyst at The New York Psychoanalytic Institute and The Institute for Psychoanalytic Education where he is also a child supervising analyst.

Dr. Jacobs attended Yale University (BA) with a major in English, and The University of Chicago School of Medicine, M.D., 1057. He took his training in psychoanalysis (adult and child) at the New York Psychoanalytic Institute and his psychiatric residency at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine.

He is a Life Fellow of The American Psychiatric Association, and a member of The American Psychoanalytic Association, and The Association for Child Psychoanalysis, and a Fellow of The American College of Psychoanalysts.

Dr. Jacobs is former President of The Association for Child Psychoanalysis and former member of the review board of The International Journal of Psychoanalysis. He is a member of the editorial boards of The Psychoanalytic Quarterly, where he is also a member of the Board of Directors, Psychoanalytic Inquiry and The Journal of Infant, Child and Adolescent Psychotherapy. He has been the recipient of many honors, including being The Freud Anniversary Lecture at both the New York and IPE Institutes, the Brill Lecturer at The New York Psychoanalytic Institute and the Plenary Address at The American Psychoanalytic Association. Dr. Jacobs sees both children and adults in psychotherapy or psychoanalysis.
